How do anti-wrinkle injections work?

Botulism Toxin is a naturally occurring bacteria in the environment. This is the main ingredient in anti-wrinkle injections. When botulism toxin is injected into the muscle, it causes a block between the nerve and the muscle. Once injected, the nerve sends signals to the muscle to contract, but as we get older, the muscle will no longer respond. After treatment, the wrinkles do not appear on the skin, and you have a smoother look.

Over time this block breaks down, and the nerve communicates with the muscle again causing contractions. The treatment will start to work gradually within a few days but can take up to 2 weeks to take full effect. It’s then naturally broken down and slowly wears off over in 3-6 months.

The toxin breaks down in the muscle but is not passed anywhere else in the body so entirely safe.
We aim to get the dose right for you to give you a very natural look which lasts at least four months. The majority of our clients return to us around the 4-6 month mark. A lot of our male clients only need to visit us twice a year; however, it depends on how much muscle movement you are happy with on the upper face.

What to expect from my treatment?

We offer a free consultation where you will have a face to face assessment with your doctor or nurse. They will spend time going through the exact science behind anti-wrinkle products explaining how it works. We will then review your past medical history to ensure you are suitable and safe for the treatment.

If you have had previous treatments in other clinics, we’ll discuss your experience and results, both good and bad. This helps us understand your face better to tailor a bespoke treatment that will be perfect for you.

The team will answer any questions you have and only when you are comfortable and ready, will your treatment start. The treatment area will be cleansed, and the product administered with a microfine needle placed no more than 3mm into the skin. Some patients barely even feel this while some will feel a small sting of the needle at the injection site that clears within seconds.

We use microfine needles to reduce any discomfort. This is different from other clinics that may use the old-style larger insulin needles.
We use only the best equipment and products to make sure your visit is as pleasant as possible. If you are particularly sensitive, we will also offer numbing cream before the treatment, which makes the injections virtually painless.

There may be small bumps where the product has been injected but these typically clear within 10 minutes (or by the time you have walked back to the tube). The treatment only takes 15 minutes, and there is no downtime so you can come to the clinic on your lunch break – no one needs to know.

We advise no exercise for 24 hours as in theory you could ‘sweat’ out the treatment with vigorous activity and no lying down for 4 hours (which is not a problem with the hectic London lifestyle).
There is a chance of a small bruise with these fine needles. If this occurs then concealer can be used, and the bruising should clear in 3-5 days.

How safe are anti-wrinkle injections?

Botulinum toxin treatments have been used for over 30 years. The product has been given in much higher doses (5-6 times the amount) in people who have neurological conditions and painful muscles spasm to ease the over-activity. It is even used in children at these higher doses. As such, it is perfectly safe in the minute doses that are placed in the muscles for anti-ageing treatments in the face. The product does not spread elsewhere in the body.

There have been no reported long-term adverse effects from any anti-wrinkle injections, and the product is naturally broken down and cleared out of the muscles within 3-6 months of the treatment. It is safe to have on-going treatments, and the results can continue to improve with repeated treatments.
